The Yodeling Pickle, Reviewed By Someone Who Now Owns Two

We bought the yodeling pickle expecting a 30-second joke. Three weeks later it's on the kitchen windowsill and it has a name. A hands-on review.

The yodeling pickle, standing upright on a kitchen windowsill like it owns the place

I want to be clear about the circumstances. It was 11:52pm. There were three of us. Someone said "a pickle that yodels" out loud, and the laugh it got was, in hindsight, too big. The order went through at 11:54.

What you get

A pickle. Plastic, roughly life-size for an ambitious pickle, with a single button on the back. Press it and it yodels for about four seconds, in a voice that sounds like a man who has been yodeling professionally for decades and has made peace with it.

Day one. The cat has not yet heard it. Innocence.

Three weeks in

Here's the thing nobody tells you: it doesn't get less funny. It gets less funny to you, sure, around day four. But every new person who walks into the kitchen gets the full experience, and watching them get it is the real product.

It has been pressed, at my count, over 200 times. Still yodels. Still the same yodel. I have started to hear it in my sleep, which I'm choosing to interpret as a feature.

Mid-yodel. Note the absence of cat.

The good

  • It yodels. Loudly. Every single time. No batteries died in three weeks of abuse.
  • Perfect White Elephant gift: gets stolen, gets regretted, gets stolen again.
  • Costs less than the round of drinks that made you buy it.

The bad

  • The yodel is one yodel. There is no second yodel.
  • Your cat will have opinions.
  • You will, at some point, press it at 2am and wake the house.

Verdict

Verdict

Only worth it drunk

If you're buying this sober, as a considered purchase, for yourself: no. There is nothing here for you. If you're buying it at a bar for a coworker's birthday, or to detonate a White Elephant exchange: yes, immediately, it is the best $12 you will spend this year.
